Last week when I was in Bondi, my sister and I met up with a friend at Henley’s Wholefoods. We almost couldn’t find the cafe as it is tucked away underneath the main street view of Oxford Street and attached to a gym. We were surprised by how quiet the cafe was for a Sunday morning, especially as the reviews were so good! Although there were only a few other tables occupied when we first walked in, I quickly spotted a gorgeous and familiar looking couple in the corner near the counter- which just so happened to be Buddy Franklin and his fiancé Jesinta Campbell! We were so star struck and desperately wanted to ask for a photo with them, but decided to let them enjoy their Sunday brunch together and just snapped a few sneaky photos from afar!
The venue was not as I expected and very plainly decorated. However, it was simplistic and clean and just brought more attention to the amazingly good looking food that was on display at the front counter. From home made muffins, to pre-packed salads and wraps ready for those on the run to take-away.
We found a small booth inside and ordered our coffees before glancing at the menu. I had already viewed their menu online so knew I was going to order the pancakes. I started my order with a long mac, which was quickly delivered to our table as what looked and tasted like a double espresso! I couldn’t drink it but can’t really complain as I didn’t speak up and say that the order was incorrect, or at least not what I expected!
Although I could have easily have settled on so many options from the menu (as they all sounded so incredible!) I stuck with my original plan and ordered the “Maca Packed Hotcakes” made from almond meal and topped with caramelised banana, choc nut crumble and served with a side of coconut yoghurt and organic maple syrup. The girls ordered the “Pumpkin Hazelnut Meal Bread” topped with zucchini ribbons, smoked salmon, coyo dressing and mixed herbs with a poached egg as an extra. Our meals came out after a very short wait and each looked incredible. To be honest, the servings looked small to begin with but as we started eating, it seemed that they were never ending! The girls said the bread was dense yet delicious so was quite filling and my servings of hot cakes was certainly satisfying. They were not fluffy or sweet but perfect on the palate and the best I’ve had in quite some time.
