Moorilla Winery is situated in Berriedale, Tasmania which is situated just over 12km out of Hobart CBD. I would know, because my friend Steph and I walked from our apartment in on Collins Street to Moorilla Winery for an afternoon of wine, cheese and bread tastings. After walking over two hours in the sunshine, we were more than elated to see the welcoming Moorilla Winery signage on Main Road. We were greeted with a long, steep driveway lined by vineyards, a spectacular view of the river and an incredible view over the city and Mount Wellington.
Once we reached the top, we were almost overwhelmed by the choices in buildings. To our right was a casual dining area with a long bar and cute seating made of chopped logs, crates and wooden stumps. We asked here if we could sample some wines, of which the friendly staff invited us to join them in the upstairs cellar door for a wine tasting tour. Before heading upstairs we viewed an outdoor oval equipped with a stage and speakers ideal for outdoor concerts with bean bag seating and park benches- perfect for the beautiful summer weather we were experiencing. After stopping for photos, we headed up stairs and past the elegant restaurant before finding our way to the cellar door that over looked the city, vineyards and casual bar area. For $10 each we were able to sample a large selection of wines made by the Canadian-born winemaker, each being accurately described by our extremely wise and passionate host. He was extremely personable and even gave us our tasting for free when he found out we had walked that distance just to sample their wines!
After out tasting ended, we headed back downstairs to sample some french cheeses and local organic breads at the bar. What would a cheese platter be without a glass of wind to wash it down? So of course we purchased a glass of our favourite wines from the wine tasting and sipped and nibbled on the deck overlooking the river and vineyard. The weather was perfection, the price, ambience and decor of Moorilla was admirable and the service, food and wine were more than definitely worth the walk.
I would definitely recommend Moorilla Winery to anyone visiting the area. For those of you with no plans to visit Hobart, I suggest you had over to their website and order a bottle or two by post. The wine was delicious. I surprising loved the Pinot Noir the most, not my usual choice but so incredible on the palate. You can catch a ferry back to Hobart from the winery which provides a gorgeous view over the city and winery, which makes a great end to a wonderful day.
