To celebrate our first night in LA, we went to Echo Park for dinner. After reading countless good reviews on the place, we were desperate to try out the new hip and happening taco joint- “Guisados”. Not only does it boast selling the most delicious tasting tacos but as it is family owned and run, the food is locally produced and consists of traditional, homestyle mexican recipes.
Although the venue itself looks like a take-away place from the outside, there are several indoor and outdoor table and seating options available. Although the decor was simple, it was great to see local art with credit to local artists being displayed on each of the interior walls.
I sampled three tacos:
1. Mole Poblano: which consisted of shredded chicken breast in a nutty Poblano style Mole and was served with sour cream, queso fresco, red onion and dried chile.
2. Hongos con Cilantro: Mushrooms cooked with cilantro and onions and served with green serrano chile and queso fresco.
3. Pescado: Grilled white fish, served atop black beans and topped with cabbage, avocado/ cilantro cream, chile arbol, and pico de gallo.
All three were so flavourful and delicious. I would say that the pescado was my favourite as it had a bit more spice than the others. All tacos are made to a medium level of spiciness, with the opportunity to increase it upon request. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, so didn’t up the chilli level- next time around I will!
The service was fast and friendly, the price was reasonably cheap ($3 per taco) and the food was amazing! The homemade corn tortillas were nothing like I’d tasted before and definitely make you reassess the tastiness of the regular taco- I don’t know if I could ever go back to the normal!
