Taku Japanese Kitchen on UrbanspoonTonight, a girlfriend and I had plans to catch up as it had been quite some time since we had been able to have a long dinner date as just the two of us. We were undecided on where to go as we wanted somewhere healthy (so as not to ruin a week of hard work), somewhere relaxed so we didn’t have to glam up after a busy day at work (for her), somewhere that wasn’t going to cost a fortune and somewhere relatively quiet where we could actually hear each other speak.

Within no time at all we had decided on Taku Japanese Kitchen in Mandurah. I phoned just after 5pm to make a reservation and to our excitement, we were booked for a table for two at 7pm.

On arrival, we were greeted by the friendly staff and shown to our table. The restaurant itself is fairly small with only about 12 tables with simple table settings. The counter and open kitchen is situated up the back of the restaurant, with access to a viewing fridge for quick take-away sushi options. We were given menus to look over and a bottle of tap water until we had decided on our order. Everything on the menu sounded great and even though our waitress was quick to take our order, we needed more time to decide as we wanted to try everything.

IMG_8312We decided on a miso soup each to start and then the sushi/sashimi tasting plate for our mains. We enjoy an extra hot serving of miso soup (although I wish I had ordered the large as it was so delicious!) Next to come was our tasting plate to share. The service time was ideal, just enough time between servings to let it settle, have a chat and then prepare for the next! Our tasting plate consisted of tuna, prawns, scallops, white fish and salmon sashimi with a side serving of raw salmon sushi. The presentation was gorgeous and the portion size could not be faulted, we couldn’t even finish what was on our plate! The service was friendly and the price was incredible.

And best of all, our total bill came to $37! Where else could we have gone for this price? We walked out over an hour and a half later feeling completely satisfied that we didn’t over eat and that we hadn’t ruined our weekly eating plan in one meal!

Taku offers BYO for only a small corkage fee which makes it an affordable option for long lunches or celebrations too! Bear in mind though that they do not offer eftpos or credit card facilities and are completely CASH ONLY!

Thanks for having us Taku, we will be back for the udon chicken noodles!
