After being recommended this place as the best bar to go to before an ice hockey game, we decided to stop into the R Bar for a quick meal and a drink or two with friends before the Blue Jackets game last week.
Conveniently located in the Arena district and only a short walk to the stadium, it was the perfect venue to catch up before the game. It had a typical sports bar feel- a little dark and dreary to be honest, but with above average food for cheap prices, it certainly didn’t disappoint. Another bonus was that because it was renowned for it’s Blue Jackets pride- there were cheap beers and their signature “blue shots ” pregame to get their customers in the zone!
Although the bar was busy, the atmosphere was great with most in their Blue Jackets gear! We were lucky in that we arrived early enough to secure a long bar table and stools so that we could drink and eat there, but some were not so lucky, with standing room only after about 5.30pm.
We looked over the fairly impressive menu for a small sports bar. I was happy to see a range of healthier options on the list with salads and wraps on offer. I ordered the Chipotle Chicken Wrap ($8.75) which consisted of grilled chicken, cheddar cheese, green peppers, tomato and lettuce. I asked for the creamy chipotle dressing on the side, which the waitress was more than happy to accommodate. The boys split the CBJ pizza ($12.50) which was cheddar, bacon and jalapeño’s on a delicious thick crust pizza.
When our meals arrived, the boys pizza was HUGE. I was worried it wouldn’t be enough, but they even had to give a few slices away as they couldn’t eat anymore. My wrap was equally huge. The produce was fresh and with the dressing on the side (WINNING) it was neither soggy nor was it killed with sauce. The dressy was actually delicious, although I was glad I asked for it on the side due to calories not flavour! It was also accompanied by a generous serve of kettle crisps which the boys were happy to eat!
